The concept of mentoring is nothing new. We have all been mentored, on an informal basis, at some time during our careers. An opportunity to discuss work challenges outside a line management relationship has often helped us view issues more objectively.
The value of mentoring is gaining a growing appreciation as a positive change agent. No longer is mentoring viewed as a 'relationship thing' or people just 'clicking', it is being seen as a valuable management tool to be used alongside, not to replace, other development activities in establishing and promoting diversity within organisations.
